The Estate

For over 500 years, the history of Argiano has been intertwined with the history of Montalcino. As a proud testament to the historic ties between Argiano and this extraordinary territory stands Villa Bell’Aria. The sixteenth-century building dominates the estate, and was the last Renaissance villa to be built within the boundaries of Montalcino. Over the centuries, ownership passed from one noble family of Sienese origin to another, through to the 1800s when the skillful leadership of Ersilia Caetani Lovatelli made Argiano wines famous among the very best salons of the time. The early 1900s witnessed the flourishing of Argiano. Indeed, it won the gold medal at the Brussels Food Exhibition in 1932 for the production of fine table and dessert wines, and in 1935 Argiano was an important presence at the Market Exposition of Characteristic Italian Wines. In 1967, Argiano definitively entered the history of Italian winemaking when it became a founding member of the Brunello di Montalcino Consortium. In 1992, the property passed from the Caetani Lovatelli family to the countess Noemi Marone Cinzano. Under the new ownership, the oenologist Giacomo Tachis came on board and, thanks to this working partnership, Solengo, the first Supertuscan of Montalcino, was born in 1995. In 2013, the estate became the property of the Esteves family from Brasile, passionate connoisseurs of the Tuscan Renaissance and true lovers of Montalcino and its wines. Leading Argiano as CEO and oenologist is Bernardino Sani, who has been with the estate since 2012. Together with agronomist Francesco Monari, Sani launched an investment and production restructuring project in 2014, focusing especially on the vineyards and on Sangiovese.
