The Estate / Distillery

The Giacomo Borgogno & Figli winery was founded by a farmer, Bartolomeo Borgogno, one of the first to produce wine in the second half of the 18th century. The most historic winery in Barolo, in the heart of the Langhe, since 1761. It is a history of goals, a winery that with its wines has been able to reach the most important events and tables of the past, such as the official dinner to celebrate the Unification of Italy, in 1861, where they toasted with a Borgogno wine. A historical memory of the Langa, thanks to the brilliant idea of Cesare Borgogno, the absolute protagonist, who understood that wine can age. In fact, from the 1922 harvest he decided to forget 20,000 bottles of the best Barolo Riserva vintages in the historic cellars: thus creating a treasure of Barolo Riserva, today the largest existing Barolo library, which is still proudly preserved. The winery follows a clear philosophy of "not changing anything and following tradition", since "tradition is a successful innovation". This does not mean remaining immobile, but studying and constantly questioning ourselves to best explain the great fortune of cultivating vineyards in such an extraordinary area for viticulture. The wines are produced as in the past, rediscovering the concrete for fermentation, and ageing only in large oak barrels with different origins and woods according to their own recipe, the majority of Slavonian origin. Over the years, the techniques, now tailor-made, have been refined, which allow us to create wines that tell the story of their territory and their vintage.

Aware of how important it is to cultivate the soil with full respect for the land, precisely because awareness is the best form of protection, only organic fertilisers are used in the vineyard, no herbicides are used, but only sustainable agricultural treatments. Hence a great achievement, the organic certification in 2019.

The Giacomo Borgogno & Figli winery is the manifestation of a tradition and its history, with an eye always attentive to the future. Because “it cannot be dispersed, it will not be dispersed”.
