The Experience
Private visit for up to 6 guests to Passopisciaro in the company of Vincenzo Lo Mauro, estate director, featuring a visit to the century-old vineyards, cellar and a vertical tasting of the estate Contrada wines and a gourmet lunch prepared by 1-Michelin Star Etna restaurant Shalai.
The Estate / Distillery
When Andrea Franchetti, renowned vintner from Tuscany, arrived on Mount Etna in 2000, the encounter with the volcano left a deep impression on him.
On the steep terraces of the Northern mountainside, often left half abandoned, he found a treasure: majestic secular vines of Nerello Mascalese, the local red varietal, growing as high up as 1,000 metres / 3,280 feet. He restored an antique farmhouse for a cellar and embarked upon a careful restoration of the vineyards.
It was the work of Andrea Franchetti which led to the division of the territory in "contrade" (clos), based on the different lava flows, the age of the lava soils and varying altitudes. This territory parcelization, later adopted by other producers as well, would over time shape the worldwide success of Etna wines.
Today Benjamin, Andrea’s son, stands at the helm of the estate together with his brother Giordano. Passopisciaro produces 6 distinctive Contrada wines, all crafted with grapes from century-old vines, in addition to a series of unusual volcano wines, including a Chardonnay grown above 900 metres asl and "Franchetti", an original blend of Petit Verdot and Cesanese d'Affile. Passopisciaro remains today the pioneering leader of the Etna region, always looking for new ways to express the unique imprint of the volcano.

IMPORTANT NOTE: the Donor of this Auction Lot indicated they will offer an additional Auction Lot to the underbidder. The auctioneers have determined that any underbidder within 10% of the Winning Bidder’s bid shall automatically purchase the additional Auction Lot. (Should you not wish to be included, ensure that your bid is more than 10% below the current Winning Bid price.) For underbidders who more than 10% below the Winning Bidder’s bid, the Auctioneer shall ask the Donor if they are willing to provide an additional lot at this price, and, if so, shall then ask the underbidder if they are willing to purchase the additional Auction Lot.
