The Estate / Distillery

In 1640, the Henriot family left their native Lorraine to settle in Champagne. In Reims, they developed their original drapery business, to which they soon added wine. They became one of the leading wine merchants in Champagne. The Henriot family invested in vineyard land and cultivated their knowledge of winemaking know-how. Apolline Henriot, Nicolas Henriot's young widow, founded Maison Henriot in 1808 with the aim of illuminating her lands through champagne. Apolline had a deep love for Champagne, the beauty of its vines and landscapes. Her vineyard in the heart of the Montagne de Reims and the 1718 reference work “Manière de cultiver la vigne et de faire le vin en Champagne”, attributed to her great-uncle, Chanoine Godinot, were sources of inspiration for the founding of the House.

Maison Henriot's terroir is shaped by three key moments in the family's history. When Henriot was founded in 1808, its vineyards were located in three villages planted with Pinot Noir: Verzy, Verzenay and Mailly-Champagne. The Montagne de Reims is thus the origin of the Henriot vineyard. In 1880, Apolline's great-grandson, Paul Henriot, married Marie Marguet, a young woman from the Côte des Blancs, giving birth to a real transition in the Henriot vineyard. Three Côte des Blancs crus planted with Chardonnay joined the vineyard: Avize, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger and Chouilly. Since then, the Henriot vineyard has expanded. Today, it includes 29 crus, most of them nestled in the heart of the original areas: Montagne de Reims and Côte des Blancs, with a majority of chardonnay and pinot noir.

Apolline Henriot then drew up a singular savoir-faire that gave the House its signature: the culture of diversity, knowledge of the vines and their origins, the art of blending and the mastery of time. Maison Henriot has always played the role of protector and promoter of Champagne. Today, it is committed to preserving the Champagne vineyards and their terroirs. Through the Alliance Terroir project, initiated by Alice Tétienne in 2020, it is adapting its viticultural practices in favour of the vines and their quality, as well as the environment. As Apolline Henriot would have wished, each of these actions is collective, so that we can continue to write Champagne's history together.
