THE ESTATE / DISTILLERY
Poggio di Sotto was founded in 1989, in the Castelnuovo dell’Abate zone, one of the finest areas in Montalcino for the cultivation of Sangiovese. From that moment, the estate constantly evolved, guided by a determination to preserve and promote its growing area and to achieve true excellence.
Today Poggio di Sotto, owned by the Tipa Bertarelli family, is universally recognised for the iconic quality of its Brunello. The southwest-facing Poggio di Sotto vineyards, lying at elevations ranging through 200, 300, and 400 metres, enjoy a warm, well-ventilated climate, with impressive day-night temperature differentials.
The vines are planted in rocky, low-nutrient soils with little organic material; of volcanic origin, they display abundant marl, schist, and limestone to a considerable depth. Poggio di Sotto is notable for its use of massal selection for new plantings, carried out in collaboration with the University of Florence; this technique ensures continuance of the characteristics of the 167 original clones, unique for their phenological traits, including cluster size and leaf
appearance. All vineyards are cultivated organically and are officially enrolled in the Brunello di Montalcino Register. Fermentations are started spontaneously with ambient yeasts, and take place in tronco-conical 50-70-hectolitre oak vats, with lengthy macerations and frequent pumpovers.
After malolactic fermentation, the wines mature in 30-hectolitre oak barrels:
2 years for Rosso di Montalcino, 3 years for Brunello di Montalcino, and 3½
- 4 years for Brunello di Montalcino Riserva. All lots of wine are vinified in accord with Brunello production protocols. Only at the end of their second year of maturation is the decision made which wines to classify as Rosso di Montalcino, for a crisp, approachable, and pleasurable wine, or as Brunello, for a more ambitious, age worthy wine.
